Listen when I say this: Women make THE BEST music producers!
Yes, I know that’s a strong statement and might even piss some people off, but hear me out on this one.
You see, it’s a widely held misconception that women find things like pressing buttons and running cables more challenging than men.
We hear all the time how hard it is to get women and girls into STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine) because “they’re just not interested” or “feel under confident” and so, it would follow that music technology was no different.
And in many cases, it isn’t!
Far fewer women take up music technology as an A level or undergrad and much fewer women cut their teeth in the studio than men.
But simply learning technical skills does not guarantee you’ll be a great music producer.
What makes does a great music producer is rarely taught in music technology courses or in music production circles and almost entirely concerns the key qualities we culturally associate with ‘feminity’.
In this week’s video, I break down exactly what these qualities are, how they help you produce better music and why you probably have them in bucket loads.
I also look at some of the most inspirational women in the industry and how they have produced some of THE BEST music we’ll ever know.
YES! Some technical skills are necessary, but if you don’t have these ‘feminine’ skills I talk about in this week’s live video, your music will never reach beyond a certain level.
